R. Kelly’s life been plagued by rumours ranging from salacious allegations to criminal accusations, here are a few to list :
R. Kelly has been accused of heinous sexual behaviour and abuse for a long time, some of which have been made public through documentaries or court filings. The R& B artist is back in court, this time in New York for a federal trial resulting from sexual assault allegations dating back years. He disputes the charges levelled against him. Robert Sylvester Kelly is born in Chicago on January 8, 1967, to Joann Kelly, a schoolteacher. R. Kelly is the third of four children who grew up in Chicago’s public housing projects with his family. His father’s identity is unknown.
1979: Kelly stated he “experienced a lot of things at a very young age that I don’t know if I was meant to,” including witnessing an older youth rape one of his girlfriends, when he was 12 years old.
1984: At the age of 17, his music teacher places him in a local talent show to play a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky.” “It was like Spider-Man getting bitten that night. In 1995, he told Newsweek, “I realised the power you receive from being onstage.” In the years that follow, he performs full-time with his Casio keyboard in Chicago subway stations, often pretending to be blind to avoid imprisonment.
R. Kelly’s R&B group MGM wins the $100,000 grand prize on Natalie Cole’s syndicated television talent competition “Big Break” in 1990. That was the group’s final performance due to financial disagreements. Kelly is discovered singing at a barbecue by Jive Records executive Wayne Williams that summer.
His album “12 Play” is published in November 1993 and goes on to sell over 5 million copies. “Sex Me” was a hit single, as was “Bump N’ Grind,” which went on to become the longest-running No. 1 R&B song in more than 30 years.
R. Kelly marries 15-year-old R&B singer Aaliyah D. Haughton on August 31, 1994, at the age of 27. Kelly arranges for the pair to marry in a private ceremony at a Chicago hotel. Because of Aaliyah’s age, the marriage is dissolved months later.
Tiffany Hawkins makes a complaint against Kelly while she was a child on February 18, 1997, alleging intentional sexual abuse and sexual harassment.
January 1998: Hawkins’ lawsuit is reportedly settled for $250,000.
Tracy Sampson sues Kelly, claiming that their intercourse was illegal under Illinois law since he was in a “position of authority” over her. According to reports, the matter was resolved out of court for an unknown sum.
The Chicago Sun-Times claimed on Feb. 8, 2002, that it had acquired a videotape purportedly showing Kelly having sex with a juvenile. According to the newspaper, Chicago cops started looking into complaints involving Kelly and the same girl three years ago. The girl and her parents denied having sex with Kelly at the time.
JPMorgan Chase bank has filed a $2.9 million foreclosure against Kelly’s suburban Chicago property, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. According to a publicist, the musician is not in financial problems.
Faith Rodgers, 20, files a complaint against R. Kelly on May 21, 2018, alleging him of sexual battery, mental and verbal abuse, and knowingly infecting her with herpes during their year-long relationship.
Faith Rogers claims Kelly threatened to divulge embarrassing facts of her sexual past in a letter to one of her lawyers in October 2018, if she didn’t dismiss her May 2018 lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault.
Aug. 14, 2020: Kelly’s manager was arrested in California on charges of threatening to shoot up a Manhattan theatre two years earlier, prompting an evacuation and the postponement of a documentary presentation about allegations that the singer sexually abused women and girls.
